Back in my 20’s, I never felt bad about the image people had of me of being mean and aggressive. But over the time, I started to change. Now I read avidly, I volunteer a lot, I clean up the local park. Most of time, I do not make excuses for my behavior or try to change myself to please other people. But I still don’t really know how I can do more to become a better person. Any advice here?

I can relate myself to you, because I can imagine that when I was young, I was just like you. In my opinion, the most important aspect of being a good man is to learn to accept changes in your life. Many people grow bitter and stubborn when they age. But we should know when it is time to change the way you see the world. Accept people who you may not have accepted before. Stop resisting the changes that are meant to be for the better. Change is a normal, healthy solution to a problem. So, be honest and admit if you have a problem. Figure out the reason why that problem occurred. If you stay in doubt, you never get better and remain stuck in the past.

Another thing I’ve noticed over the years is that sometimes we just don’t know how to deal with our emotions. For most people, emotions supersede logic. This is not just a woman’s problem because men get overemotional, too. Their favorite emotion is anger, which they tend to take out on other people. It cannot be overemphasized that you should always keep your emotions under control. Know that one emotion tends to lead into another. Anxiety stems from fear, so work on getting rid of your fears. There is a saying that the only thing to fear is fear itself. Confront the situations that make you so restless, and you will become a better manager of emotions and ultimately a better person.

Don’t ask how to be a better person, if you have not been first and foremost a good observer. Learn how to take in the world around you with wider, brighter eyes. See the world from perspectives that are different from your own. Consider going into amateur astronomy because much of the work involves making observations. When you become a better observer, you recognize problems that never existed before. You are act in ways that are more open and giving.

I think you can definitely be a better person if you are always surrounded by those who love you. So you could improve yourself by making new friends. Become more active to become a better person. Shy or not, step outside to get your blood flowing every once in a while. Make a plan to engage in lively activities with other people. You want to be the person who gets involved with the rest of the group. In no time, you will interact with other people with ease and increase your circle of friends. You may be surprised that you will get accepted by others a lot more with the increase of your new friends.
