Staying awake is easier said than done, especially if you are like me and have a few hours of sleep every night. When I head to work, the first thing I want to do is get a strong coffee and some sugar to get me going. After the sugar rush wears off, I am back to feeling tired and sluggish and wanting to take a nap. I know how to fall asleep at night, but what about staying awake during the day?

Without caffeine, is it possible to stay awake at work? Yes. You want to keep your mind and eyes stimulated for a long time. So, keep the blinds open and let the sunlight pour into the room. Natural sunlight is always more stimulating than artificial light, and the energy from the sun is free and easily abundant. If you fear you will fall asleep, fill the room with bright sunlight that forces you to stay awake.

Give your eyes a break every now and then. When you stare at the computer screen for too long, you increase the tedium associated with your work. You feel more like a programmed robot than a human with feelings and emotions. Eventually, you become so bored that you get tired and then want to fall asleep.

Turn your eyes away from the subject and focus on something else for a change. Change your surroundings by taking a walk or watching a short film. Usually, looking at moving images is a stimulating activity. There are plenty of interesting activities going on in nature, even if you work in an urban area. So, stay awake by looking out into the world and reminding yourself that you are alive.

Many people ask how to stay awake at work. My personal suggestion to that would be to enjoy the smells around you, which do not include other people’s body odors or the doughnuts down the hall. Introduce a variety of scents that will liven up the room. Decide which scents stimulate your nose the most, whether it comes from roses or peppermint oil.

Burn a candle whenever you need to stay alert. The sharp, smoky smell makes it hard to fall asleep easily, so burn as many candles as you can. Fortunately, every major store provides candles with all different scents, such as vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, citrus and more. In combination with your oils, make your office smell like a place of stimulation and relaxation.
