Why is it called 50 Shades of Grey?

I have often wondered why a book would be called 50 Shades of Grey. It doesn’t seem to make any sense with the plot of the book. Why is it called 50 Shades of Grey? What are the reasons behind the name?

Many people have speculated for a long time about why the author chose to name the book 50 Shades of Grey. While there are all sorts of theories floating around, if you have read the books the answer is really fairly simple once you get past all the bondage and unrealistic relationship issues.

50 Shades of Grey is a play on words. Essentially the author is trying to convey that there is no black and white area. Rather, there is the area in between, or the grey area, that most people don’t even like to think about. The entire series of books essentially is about a man who doesn’t play by the same rules as everyone else. From his business to his personal life everything about the main character, Christian Grey, is a grey area. There are typically more questions than answer surrounding the character and 50 Shades of Grey takes you down and long and winding road of questions that never seem to be answered right away. Hence, 50 Shades of Grey is a fitting name for not only the book, but also the main character.

Why is it called 50 Shades of Grey? Because the book likes to screw with your head. This entire series is based on a guy that no one can seem to figure out. Whether he’s manipulating someone into a job interview, or trying to get them into bed, Christian Grey is 50 shades of confusing. There are so many questions that always seem to go unanswered in the first book which is forcing you to essentially read the second book in the series. I personally believe it’s called 50 Shades of Grey because it leaves you feeling as though you’re stuck in limbo wondering if it’s okay for you to be so turned on by a book or whether you should be hiding the way your feel. The grey area leaves too many questions unanswered.
