I’m a 16 year old girl and my face is really oily. I know that contributes to the pimples and blackheads I’m always fighting. I wash my face in hot water twice a day and I don’t eat many greasy foods. I don’t understand why is my face so oily?

I had oily skin, too, when I was a teen so I know how frustrating it is. My skin was always glistening, my makeup didn’t stay on long because the oil came shining through, and pimples were a common occurrence. I was always jealous of those girls who seemed to have perfect, non-oily complexions, so I did a little research to find out why my face was so oily.

It turns out there are what’s called sebaceous glands under the skin all over our bodies, even where there is no hair. These glands are put there to produce oil to help protect the hair on our body and keep our skin from drying out, but sometimes they overproduce. When that happens, your skin pores release the excess oil onto your skin. There are multitudes of these sebaceous glands under the surface of your facial skin, especially in the T-zone: forehead, nose, and chin; if they start overproducing oil, your face is going to feel greasy. Some people’s skin tend to produce more oil than others (genetics can play a role) so if you fall into that category, you are going to be battling oily skin.

This is probably not going to be the answer you expect because it contradicts many things you have been told about oily skin, but to me, it’s still could be the reasons "why is my face so oily".

First, be sure to only use tepid water to wash your face. Heat encourages oil production so it’s important to keep your face cool and not use hot water when washing it. Try to find and use natural products that don’t contain alcohol or harsh chemicals that dry your skin out, again sending the wrong message.

And don’t wash your face too much, but twice is ok. Because when you wash your face frequently, you are removing the natural oils and your skin doesn’t like that. It sends a signal to the sebaceous glands to up the oil production because it is being stolen and stripped away. Limiting the amount of times you wash your face will help your body realize it can cut back on the amount of oil it creates.

Also, keep up the healthy diet. Cut back on those processed foods and add more fruits and veggies. They’re not just good for the inside of your body. Your skin really needs those nutrients, too.

So if anyone is wondering how to make face less oily, tips above can help as well.
