Why was the Eiffel Tower built?

I once heard that this design was part of an architectural design contest, that it was designed as the main entrance to the international exhibition. I also heard it was designed to mark the French Revolution's 100th anniversary. Among these two, I don't know which is the right reason why the Eiffel Tower was built.

There are several reasons why the Eiffel Tower was built.

  1. The major reason why the tower was designed and constructed was for the 1883 Paris Exposition as a commemorative monument for marking the French Revolution 100 year anniversary in Europe. The French Revolution was aimed at eliminating the divine right kings and ending dictatorships to institute a democratic system of government, it has remained a very important event in French History. Most French officials and nationals wanted to keep the 100 years anniversary fresh in their memories by improving Paris and French qualities. Several people were of the opinion that erecting a beautiful edifice would be a great way to celebrate the 100 year anniversary. All over France, several designers and engineers came up with different ideas and designs on how France could be improved. Among the different ideas that came up, the design of Gustave Eiffel Tower made the best impression on a majority of the people.
  2. Another major reason why the Eiffel Tower was constructed was because it held a lot of promises for some scientific researches. The great height of the Eiffel Tower made it quite suitable for experiments involving temperature, pressure and radio telegraphy. As a matter of fact, the major reason why the Eiffel Tower is still with us today is because it is used for radio transmissions. 20 years after the Eiffel Tower rent expired, several people wanted it demolished and used for scrap metal purposes. But, it was saved because politicians and scientists wanted it as a radio transmission tower.
  3. Lastly, another major reason for building the Eiffel Tower was to institute a history that would serve as a living example of the Paris Exposition. As at that time, the Eiffel Tower should be the tallest building in the whole world. This was what motivated most of the French builders to take up the design of the tower and construct it.
